These are the Brakes…Brake it up, Brake it up, Brake it up! (Channeling my Kurtis Blow)

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of getting my hands a little dirty and tackling a rear brake and rotor job on the Honda Crosstour.  Very simple job…when everything goes smoothly.  I was able to knock out the driver side in about 25 minutes, taking my time and taking pictures of the process.  The passenger side is an entirely different story full of stripped bolt and screw heads.  Thanks to Autozone for have new caliper bolts and guide pins in stock.

Doing the job myself, I was able to save a ton of money over stealership cost.  Last I checked, they were charging a discounted price of $230 to do the front brakes and resurface the rotors.  I ordered a new brake and rotor kit on Amazon for $100 from R1 Concepts.  The new kit included both front and rear rotors and ceramic brakes.  I only had to pick up some new brake fluid and grease for the calipers and rotors to keep the squealing away.

All disassembled and ready for the new parts. Remember to clean up the area prior to installing the new goods.

Do it the right way. Adding the grease to keep the rotor from squealing and rusting together. Added this grease to the guide pins to keep caliper movement smooth.

This little booger was one of the screws for the passenger rotor. Had to drill it out and replace it. It took forever and made the job much more difficult, but patience prevailed. Perfect example of having the right tools for the job. Thank you brother-in-law for the gift (Speed out).

All-in-all not a bad day.  Next week…I’ll tackle the fronts.

Guess who’s back?

You know that face you made the moment when you’ve finally mastered lift-off oversteer or Drift mode in your Focus ST/RS, or when you nailed the apex at a local drift event in your Mustang?  Then you go home all excited to upload your video to YouTube only to see that Ken Block released Climbkhana and he is dangling the back end of the Hoonicorn off a cliff?

Yep… that’s the face.

Sticker shock!

I went to the dealership this morning to get my  first free oil change on the ST.  I noticed that the dealership was pretty empty of customers and even though I had an appointment, I was still surprised I didn’t have to wait to get my car in the service bay. 

To kill my time I, like most car people, decided to walk the lot and check out the inventory.  As to be expected, there were several Mustangs V6’s and GT’s and slew of F150 variations on the lot all waiting to to go a new home.  Back inside the showroom I saw a black Focus RS and GT350 on display.  Right outside the rear doors of the showroom there was a fully loaded 2018 Raptor. I do love the look of this truck. Very stylish and loads of power.

Although I am not buying anything, I always check out the prices of the vehicles that I like and it amazes me the amount of dealership markup they are asking for their “low production” performance vehicles.  The Focus RS has proven to be a great car but has been out for almost a year and this particular dealership is still asking $4k over msrp putting it at $46k, and that is without the upgraded wheels and tires.  

I also peeked at the sticker on the Raptor and they want $20k over sticker, bringing it up to a MIND BLOWING $90k!!!  This for an off-road pick up truck.  Although it is an impressive truck, I personally have a difficult time digesting a $70k sticker price and then by adding a $20k insult markup I find rather absurd.  I guess they need to make money if they’re not selling.   Here’s a thought, maybe with a lower price, they might sell more.
