BMW of Riverside Cars & Coffee

Alrighty, I am finally getting around to posting these from my Sunday outing. I was scrolling thru Facebook last week and saw that my local BMW dealership was hosting a Sunday edition of Cars & Coffee. With this one being held from 8-11 on a Sunday rather than the typical Saturday 7-10 time slot that most are held made it easier for me to attend.

You can tell from the pictures it was a decent turn out with some rather nice cars. I mainly went because I am slowly becoming a fan of BMW’s more and more and really would like to get the M2 on the road and track and of course parked in my garage one day. I do have some familiarity with the Bavarian car maker brand a I’ve done a drive event or two and have an infatuation with the European models that we don’t see here stateside. The one that I’m watching a lot of content on is the M140i/M240i hatchbacks, particularly the Motech and Motech Shadow editions. These cars are tuned by a BMW tuning company called Motech and then sold through dealerships in Europe. These share the same platform and engine that we see here in the 135i and the M235i/240i coupes but with a few engine upgrades, body pieces and tweaks to the suspension. The M235/240 coupes are nice but take a backseat to the full track monster found in the M2. But that’s another story and topic to cover…back to the Cars & Coffee event.

Again nice cars, a dj playing music, prizes, chill people, reving contest and a sense of community as with any car group. The only difference is you get the feeling with some of these guys that it’s BMW or nothing. I even heard someone commenting on my ST as I drove onto the lot to park. It’s to be expected as I was crashing their party, so no big deal. Enough chatter on to the pics and video.

Nice wrap on this one

Cars & Coffee Corona

I finally made it out to another Cars & Coffee with my son and it was a great turn out.  The California rains finally pulled back and let the sun shine thru and Corona car owners were able to bring out their garage queens and some daily drivers for people to admire.

Not sure what platform this kit car is based off of, but it had an S2000 shift knob, Corvette mirrors, Miata gauge pod and what appears to be sitting on a Lotus wheel base.  The owner was not around when I came back by the car after snapping the other pics.wp-image-676043530jpg.jpgwp-image-1168912560jpg.jpgwp-image-1839451495jpg.jpgwp-image-178775825jpg.jpgwp-image-425738540jpg.jpgwp-image-2022639959jpg.jpgwp-image-1514458444jpg.jpgwp-image-2119499527jpg.jpgwp-image-1462950102jpg.jpgwp-image-762172459jpg.jpg

Now this is worth getting up at 7 am on a Saturday.  I was able to speak to the owner of this very rare and pristine M5 wagon.  He told me that it is 1 of 4 or 6 in the world.  BMW never put the M5 wagon into production, but they did a few prototypes.  It is a E39 wagon with a FULL…I repeat FULL M5 conversion.  Motor, suspension, wheels, exhaust, 6 speed manual as well as the seats.  He told me it is putting out over 400 hp with a 0-60 time in the low 4’s.  A true unicorn!  The owner purchased the car in 2014 and only takes it out on the occasional weekend.  He told me that the car only has a little over 3k miles on it…OMG!wp-image-2044876447jpg.jpgwp-image-407392067jpg.jpgwp-image-1887228565jpg.jpgwp-image-1210081517jpg.jpgwp-image-258613490jpg.jpgwp-image-1999154178jpg.jpgwp-image-440549478jpg.jpgwp-image-1788677618jpg.jpg

As you can see, it’s a 65 Notchback.wp-image-30588287jpg.jpgwp-image-1067411473jpg.jpgwp-image-579322600jpg.jpgwp-image-1125892130jpg.jpg

This is the Maclaren I posted the other day. As you can see it was the star of the show.  It was a little difficult to get some clear shot due to all the people crowding around.  It was a new purchase so the owner had to show it off.   One day…wp-image-1945656619jpg.jpgwp-image-1089778800jpg.jpgwp-image-483542840jpg.jpgwp-image-226176882jpg.jpgwp-image-1851346664jpg.jpgwp-image-994226406jpg.jpg

I’m glad to see that people are still attending this event here at Saleen in Corona.  I need to get out to the Cars & Coffee in Palos Verde one day.  Thats where the big boy toys are.

Thanks for looking.

Zoom-Zoom and the Ultimate Driving Machines

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, it has been a very busy 2 weeks to say the least.  Lots going on with my car, mixed in with some car shopping for my son, add in a few automotive reviews, all make for a very tired Perk.

After attending a Mazda drive demo at the Orange County International Auto Show, I received an email invite to attend their “Driving Matters Ride and Drive” track event at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.  I invited my buddy and my wife to the event so we can really see what the 2016 Mazda MX5 was all about.  But first up I used my Saturday to visit the happiest place on earth…Carmax!  I kid, but at Carmax you can browse and drive anything on the lot and there is no pressure from the blood thirsty greasy hair, sweaty chest hair and gold chain swinging salesmen you usually find at dealerships to worry about.

In their showroom I found what Santa needs to bring me this year, a 2016 Yas Marina Blue Metallic BMW M3 with the carbon fiber roof.

Isn’t it beautiful?  Santa I’ve been really good this year and Perks Garage needs a company car. ūüėÜ

On Sunday we made the drive out to the Speedway for the Mazda event and when we arrived I noticed that BMW was also there hosting their BMW Experience.  Hmmm, I don’t recall seeing an invite for that one.  Oh well, onto the Mazda event.  There were not a lot of people this day which helps so we didn’t have to wait in long lines to drive the cars.  Mazda had a slalom and a 0-60-0 braking section set-up.  The cherry on top was that they were also letting us get on the track to do a hot lap with one of their professional drivers.  Hot damn, after attending several motorcycle races and Porsche events over the years, I’ve longed for the day to drive on this track.  This was going to be FUN!

The Miata/MX5 has always had a Jekyll & Hyde complex.

I immediately started taking pictures and then we checked in at the registration table. Mazda has you take a Breathalyzer test…at 9 am?  I guess liability is liability.  Not to worry drinking doesn’t usually start until 9:30 am so we passed.  I’m kidding, we usually don’t hit the bar until 10 lol.

After getting our wristbands to drive, we hopped in the line to do the 0 to 60 braking test they had set up.  The objective is to floor the accelerator and then jam the brakes, stopping in a coned section.  This was to showcase the acceleration and braking capabilities of the lightweight Mazda.  On hand were both auto and manual transmissions for those who can drive them.  Apparently someone didn’t and burned up the clutch on one of the MX5’s by launching the car from 3rd gear rather than 1st.  Sadly this limited the number of available manual transmission cars.

wp-image-1510947626jpg.jpgwp-image-459282287jpg.jpgwp-image-1237134789jpg.jpgwp-image-805718838jpg.jpgwp-image-298388292jpg.jpgOn the Club version above, you can get the optional Brembo brakes with red calipers, 17″ BBS wheels, and Bilstein dampers.  I think they also mentioned a limited slip diff.

The event was really fun and I was even able to talk my wife into doing the braking test and doing a slalom ride along with one of the Mazda reps.  You should have seen her smile.  The car is very comfortable, nimble and packs a lot more power than the 1991 BRG Miata I owned, so it took me by surprise when I did the slalom and broke the tail end out a bit.  Check out my runs.  We did back to back runs through the slalom.  So much fun!

The 0-60-0 braking challenge was fun as well.

My wife even took a chance and rode shotgun during a slalom run with one of the Mazda drivers.

The real fun was on the track where the car excels in its class.  It is a very playful chassis and pushing it to its limits is where the car comes alive.  It is easy to see why my neighbor has owned and races so many of them over the years.  This really makes me miss mine.

wp-1477338817750Hello sire!20161016_120001Getting ready to hit the track in the MX5.

After we did our lap on the track, my friend says that was way more fun than he expected.  That was cool since he was apprehensive about driving such a low powered hairdressers car.  A common term referencing the fact that its a top down roadster just like the TT.

Walking back  to our cars we said lets go “check out” the BMW event.  In other words, lets try to sneak in.  Sitting in front of their tent we were pleasantly greeted by a 2016 M4 in Austin Yellow Metallic…another color out of the BMW bag of skittles.  Flashy, but I dig it.wp-1477338671643.jpg

Upon entering the tent we approached the reception table…

BMW rep: “Did you register online?”

Me:”Uh, no!?”

BMW rep:”Thats ok, sign here and we will squeeze you in.”

In my head the Napoleon Dynamite ‘Yesssss’ was echoing.

Well it worked, we even saw some of the same people that were at the Mazda event.

BMW had a similar set up, only they had an autocross course set-up rather than taking the cars on the actual track.  The staff and pro drivers gave us a walk through of the events and were very helpful throughout the demos.  They gave a guided tour of the 0-60-0 braking, which we were passengers in the X5, as well as the autocross course. The X5 happened to be the only non M packaged  vehicle in their line up for the day but still drops anchor in the braking dept.   Like Mazda, this was a smash the go-fast pedal and then Fred Flinstone the brakes.  They were very encouraging on putting the cars in sport + mode and wreaking havoc on the M brakes.  I first took the reigns of the 340i sedan in Estoril Blue with M performance bits – body kit, brakes, suspension and M badges.  Hitting about 65mph on the straight and coming to an eye-bulging stop in a split second.  It lagged a bit off the line, but quickly got up to speed.

Next was the 640i convertible, a very suitable upgrade to my TT, don’t you think?

You can hear my wife very clearly enjoying herself in each video, until she cried uncle and said enough is enough.

Now for the serious weaponry…2016 Estoril Blue M235i with carbon fiber inlays and that Alcantara racing steering wheel with the built in shift lights…oh how I love thee!

And the  2016 Sakhir Orange M3 in Beastmode!wp-1477338707840.jpg20161016_140716

Now both of these cars are serious on the playground and the smiles per horsepower are unmatched.  Real point and shoot driving machines.  0-70-0 comes REAL QUICK! And they sound amazing doing it.  Sadly there was some rubbing coming from the rear heat shield of the M3 that had to be massaged back into place.

Lastly, we hit the autocross and I jumped at the opportunity to bend some corners in the M3.  Get the tail end loose and with it’s precise steering I was able to get the beast safely through those tight turns while avoiding  hitting any of the cones.

Here I am doing a discovery lap in the 340i.  I was just warming up for my run in the M3.

I enjoyed some amazing cars, spent time with my good friend and my wife and even met some new friends that invited me out to autocross with them.  “What’s up isaac?”

This was the best automotive weekend ever!   Definitely looking forward to the next Perks Garage outing.

Enjoy the pics and videos, we had a blast taking and making them.  Excuse some of the camera movement, but the BMW M-Cars haul much a$$!

Oh yeah, and this also happened.  Story to follow…

L.A. Auto Show

Went to the L.A. Auto Show over the weekend and took a few pictures. ¬†Some of these are cellphone pics from my Galaxy Note 5…awesome camera!¬† There were a lot of the same cars from the O.C. Auto Show I went to over a month ago,¬† but L.A. had a few more new ones on display.¬† Fiat previewed it’s new 124 Spyder¬†that is based on the Miata platform and an interesting new entry¬†from Alfa Romero – the Giulia, which promises 510 Italian horsepower. ¬†Lots of spectators and a few celebrities in attendance. ¬†I saw Josh Smith from the Clippers and Eddie¬†Huang – Executive Producer for ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” both were signing autographs. ¬†Hilarious show, please check it out when you get a chance.

Now on to the photos.

BMW Ultimate Driving Experience

A few weeks ago I happened to be scrolling thru my spam folder looking for an email when I came across an invitation from BMW to come out and test out their vehicle line this weekend. Now I have done several of these driving events in the past, but for different manufacturers. ¬†Since I started my blog I had been looking for an event to attend to write about and what do you know…Boom! ¬†Right here in the good ole spam folder nestled between an incredible banking opportunity from the Prince of Zamunda and my free trial of Viagra pills emails was my Willy Wonka Golden Ticket email from BMW to come out and enjoy myself. ¬†Very excited, I emailed my wife and told her, Its on like Donkey Kong! ¬†I’m getting ready to see just how Ultimate their cars are…hmmm!

Well, I went to register and found out that all dates were filled up and only the wait-list was available but¬†I signed us up anyway. ¬†The wife and I hopped in the Audi and¬†showed up at 8:30 am ready see what the other German competitor¬†had to offer. ¬†Now for some reason Saturday’s temp was like 110 degrees, but it was still a beautiful day overall. ¬†Now¬†if you don’t know what wait-list means, it means that we are not able to participate in the auto-cross activities unless some lazy folks did not show up for their assigned time slots. ¬†The only thing is that there were 20-30 other people who were waiting as well so we didn’t make the 9 am cut off for drivers ūüė¶

BMW had a Suite set up for all that were invited. ¬†This suite was very plush and set up like a sterile showroom. ¬†Think Diddy and his white parties in the Hamptons. ¬†They had an espresso bar, a buffet of dried fruit and assorted nuts with 3…I said 3 different drinking waters! ¬†There was ¬†the standard cucumber, but also strawberry, and lemon-lime. ¬†Rather refreshing and appropriate for its clientele. ¬†Enough about that…lets talk cars!

I was never really looking at BMW unless it was an M, but I was really impressed with the line of vehicles, from the 1000 RR street bike to the 228i coupe all the way up to the 750Li. ¬†The first vehicle we test drove was the X5 and MAN was my mind blown with the way this vehicle was packaged. ¬†Soft subtle leather and refinement like I’d never seen in a SUV. ¬†I fell instantly in love with the giant panoramic roof, definitely a must have for my next vehicle. ¬†The heads up display captured my wife’s heart as well as the accuracy of the navigation. ¬†The heads up display showing on the windshield not only shows your navigation route, your speed, but also the posted speed limit…WHUUUUUUUT! ¬†MIND BLOWN!!!

I took control of the 550i GT. ¬†I really like this style of car, similar to our Honda Crosstour with its 5-door hatchback styling. ¬†The ride in both vehicles was very nice and the handling for vehicles of this size is a reason that BMW excels in this market demographic. ¬†The one vehicle that I was anxious to get my hands on was the 228i coupe as the M235 was not available for my abuse. ¬†Automotive journalists have been giving a lot of praise to the M235 coupe saying how much better and truer the driving experience is over the M3/4 series that just came out. Getting behind the wheel of the M4’s little brother gave me some insight, especially when I put the vehicle into Sport+ mode and blipped the paddle shifters. ¬†The 240hp from this little light weight marvel reminds me that I need to do an engine remapping on my TT to unlock some more power. ¬†APR here I come.

OK, well I am getting a bit too wordy, so on to the pics.
